Personal Protection

Recently received a contact from a professional dog trainer interest in a pup from us specifically for bite work in Protection Sports Association, PSA and Personal Protection Dog, PPD.

He indicated he heard of an old dude, me, and how my Chesapeakes have not had all their protection instincts breed out of them.

So, this got my curiosity up so I searched around and found this interesting story on Reddit

The Farnells in Cosmopolis, WA (near Aberdeen, out on the coast) are an old dude out in the country type of Chessie breeder on acreage with wetlands and their own duck ponds.

Our female is from them and is the best dog I’ve ever had, she was also the most high maintenance and challenging puppy I’ve ever had. She’s a proven, personal protection, velcro dog for me and is the pack leader of 4 dogs. Incidents that I know of: she helped me run off a large cinnamon black bear that was in the process of suffocating one of our other dogs (biting around the head and neck, the dog lived!). While I was out limbing trees in the woods with her, she briefly took off solo to yell at three wolves to get off her territory and then came right back. Per tracks and cams they gave a half mile wide berth and went around the long way. (We live in the mountains with a heavy predator population.) My husband wanted to add a male Chessie after the bear incident. So we did.

Our male Chessie is 18 months and has chosen his job to be a livestock guardian dog for our chickens. He doesn’t wander, chases wildlife back to the treeline and has a deep, convincing bark.
